This project transformed an underutilized backyard with a basic car shelter and failing fences into a fully functional garage and outdoor living space. The goal was to create a durable, open structure that could serve both as covered parking and a space for entertaining.
All existing structures were removed before installing deep-set pressure-treated 6×6 posts to support the new build. The design included a vaulted ceiling with minimal lateral supports, allowing for a wide, open interior. To achieve this, 10×10 Douglas fir beams were installed as both structural support and a defining architectural feature.
The framing and fencing were built using pressure-treated lumber for long-term durability. The exterior fence was clad in Ipe wood and finished with oil to enhance its lifespan and appearance. A tongue-and-groove ceiling added warmth to the interior, contrasting with the exposed beam structure.
The floor was poured in concrete and polished for a clean, low-maintenance finish. Electrical was also installed, including a dedicated panel for potential future EV use.
The result is a versatile backyard structure that functions as both a garage and a comfortable space for hosting gatherings.
