SZ Obsidian Builds works primarily with premium cedar and select hardwoods, sourcing materials that will perform structurally and look good over the long term.
Wood fence installation begins with the foundation — properly spaced posts, set to the correct depth, in concrete that cures before any load is applied. The result is a wood fence that stays plumb, stays square, and stays standing through years of freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal movement.
Privacy & Security
A privacy fence serves a specific purpose: it creates a defined, enclosed space where you can use your property without being visible from the street or neighbouring yards. Achieving that effectively requires proper height, solid panel construction, and framing that won’t rack or sag over time.
SZ Obsidian Builds constructs privacy fences that are solid, well-framed, and built to the height and specification the project requires. We pay close attention to how the fence interacts with the grade of the property — accounting for slopes, transitions, and any areas where drainage or footing conditions require additional attention.

SZ Obsidian Builds designs and builds decorative fences with the same structural rigour we apply to every project — but with greater emphasis on proportion, profile, and finish detail. This includes picket fences with custom profiles, slatted contemporary designs, and period-appropriate styles that complement heritage homes.
We work with clients to develop a design that fits the architecture of the home and the character of the neighbourhood, rather than defaulting to whatever is easiest to build.
Full Replacements
Many fence replacements are the direct result of work that was done without adequate structural attention the first time around. Posts set without proper depth or concrete, frames built with undersized lumber, and panels installed without accounting for moisture movement all lead to early failure.
When SZ Obsidian Builds replaces a fence, we start by assessing what went wrong and ensuring the replacement is built to a higher standard. Old material is removed cleanly, posts are reset properly, and the new structure is framed and finished to last.
If sections of the existing fence can be salvaged, we’ll let you know. If the entire structure needs to come down, we’ll tell you that too, clearly and honestly, before the work begins.
